Miranda - essay
What do you want to be? It is a hard choice, but you can nearly open a magazine, and choose what you want to do with your life. What about being a successful business woman, with no husband or children, working the entire day? Or you can choose to become housewife, being home all day long, changing diapers, and having no social life at all. Or maybe you could make a combination of them, and being one of those women who works late, and forgets the kids in the kindergarten? It is a hard choose, it all sounds so funny (a little bit of sarcasm maybe?). This is the hard choice only eighteen years old Miranda is standing in front of, and to her it is quite clear, she is going to have the child even if her parents don’t want her to. She has made up her mind, even before she has heard her parents arguments. She also gets disappointed when Michael gives op, maybe because she deep inside isn’t so sure that it is the right choice she is making, and then she wants to be confirmed in her choice. It is a very hard choice for an only eighteen years old girl, she has to decide not only her own, but also Michael and the child’s destiny. Already here we begin to see a little bit of what might be the author’s message with the story, something with chooses and consequences. Miranda is standing in front of a big choice that will have some big consequences for her life, but already when she decided to have unprotected sex with Michael she made a big choice, and now she sees the consequences. When Michael gets to know what happens he takes responsibility straight away, and asks her to marry him, which I think is very mature, but he doesn’t give himself much time to think about the situation, and he doesn’t even ask if it would be better with an abort? Later, when they are talking with the parents he is getting cold feeds. Maybe he has had time to think about the situation and which consequences it’s having later on. He also has to think about his education; does he want to be the hard-working family guy that never has any time for himself? With a child at home, a three roomed apartment to pay for, and a stressed wife to take care of? The parents thinks that they know what is right for their daughter, and especially the mom doesn’t think the love is going to last, because she is so young, and she has to try some different guys, and that she shouldn’t be taking the first and the best. Holly thinks the same, that you are to take a look at the range, but what about “true love last forever”? A lot of love stories is about the one and only, and how young people meet, and stay together for the rest of their lives, even when things isn’t going like planed. Here we clearly see the big difference between Miranda and her parent’s values. Family means a lot to Miranda, and she already sees the baby as a living child, and not like “something she is piping blood into” like her mom sees it. Miranda believes that sex doesn’t have anything with love to do, like Holly makes it seem. Her mom is valuing a good carrier and a good education highly. She is thinking about that Miranda has to experience some things, but that isn’t what she wants. That is hard for her to realize, maybe she was a more experimenting type when she was young, and that is why it is difficult for her to see things from Miranda´s view. I think it’s a little strange to use bribery, instead of listening to what Miranda wants.
At last I can conclude that the message is to be care full with the choices you make; it will have a big impact on you life.
