'Neighbors' is a short story written by Raymond Carver in 1988. It is from his collection of short stories named 'Short cuts'.
Point of view
Neighbors is written in a 3rd person view.
The story is told about someone else and is not the narrator's own story, it is narrated by He/She perspective
Characterization of the Millers and the Stones
The first couple we are introduced to is the Millers. They are a happy couple, and they have what they need, but no more than that. I will call them a middleclass couple. The wife, Arlene, works as a secretary and the man, Bill, as a bookkeeper.
The Millers lives across the hall from the second couple ind the story named the Stones. The Stones are clearly classified as upper class. The man, Jim, works as a salesman, and they travel a lot related to his job, but on the same time as pleasure because they can. The Millers also have the money and time to go out in the evening and have dinner, and all kinds of entertaining, that the Stones do not have in their lives.
In the daily life the two couples get along just fine. When the Stones are travelling, the Millers look after their apartment and feed their cat. Although it is clear that beneath the surface lies a certain jealousy from the Millers.
Even though they are happy, they do envy the Stones for the things they have.
Theme
An essential theme in Neighbors is envy, because it takes up much of the Miller's life, that they want the same things as the Stones.
The theme happiness is also important. If money and other materialistic things will make you happy. I think that it is interesting because even though the Stones seems successful and in a fulfilling life, it does not have to be that way. It is very possible that the Millers actually have a greater love than the Stones.
I think the theme jealousy is relevant, because the Millers are jealous at the Stones. Even though they are happy and live a good life, the have a big feeling of jealousy, we can see that, when they begin to use a lot of time in the Stones apartment while they are gone. They would wish they were them.
Raymond Carvers writing style
Raymond Carvers writing style is very simple, he does not use slang or any difficult words. It is very easy to understand. He understands how to show us the story without telling us it. It is written between the lines, that the Millers want that life the Stones have
